Sea Cucumbers - Just Another Thing To Be Exploited!

These strange and funny sea creatures are actually really important to the sea's health and the last thing we should be doing is harvesting them to satisfy the palate of the Asia market.
New Zealand has just discovered that there is money to be made in these creatures and are currently working out how they can harvest enough of them to make it worth their while.

Please click through to the video and watch the "news" item about the lucrative market being investigated.... (I can't embed the video on here):  VIDEO  don't worry, you won't lose this page and when you come back you can then read this blog which explains the importance of these creatures (if you don't already know):  BLOG

We shouldn't be harvesting the wild ones and farming them isn't an option either .... how are they going to be fed?  Manure from the dairy farms?

I meant, ewww, who wants to eat something that eats poop?

Please, no, don't go there N.Z. we should be cleaning our sea, not selling our cleaners!

McDonalds Sponsored What?

Today I read that a weekend conference for Nutritionists held in California had, as their main sponsor, McDonalds.
Yes, you read that right.  What on earth is McDonalds doing at a Nutrition conference???

It appears that they were promoting their "healthy menu" by being the only provider of lunches ..... which, as far as I'm concerned, is no more "healthy" than their regular meals.
To quote from the article:

"One peered into a plastic bowl containing a salad of lettuce, bacon, chicken, cheese, and ranch dressing. The other arranged two chocolate chip cookies and a yogurt parfait on a napkin. "Eww," she said, gingerly stirring the layers of yogurt and pink strawberry goop. The woman with the salad nodded in agreement, poking at a wan chicken strip with her plastic fork."
Sounds disgusting.

McDonalds wasn't the only sponsor, oh no, Hersheys, Butter Buds, Sizzler and California Pizza Kitchen were also there touting their wares.  Even the California Beef Council were giving out pamphlets on how to lose weight by eating steak.

All of this is just so wrong.  But unfortunately, we live in a society where those who have the money also have the power and to put on a large conference it takes money.  It's such a shame that those who organized this event perhaps had no other alternative but to get sponsorship from the least nutritional companies they could find.

I don't believe they should have even considered doing such a thing as, in my mind, it just makes the word "nutritionist" a complete farce.

Antibiotics Fed to Farm Animals

As it says in the picture - 80% of antibiotics are fed to farm animals.  In my opinion it's no wonder humans have built up a resistance to this form of medication.  I call it "over dose".

Being vegetarian will help limit the amount of antibiotics you absorb.
Being vegan will guarantee you have no dose at all!

It's a Shame Not All Mothers Can Enjoy Mothers Day

Take some time this Mother's Day to think of all the mothers who can't be with their babies in warm, natural surroundings doing things that come naturally.
Will you be having bacon for breakfast? .... just a thought - maybe this mother's day you could go without pork products as a way of acknowledging the plight of other mothers.

Art For The Sake Of The Planet

One of my interests is pastel painting and I have long admired an artist called Zaria Forman.  She paints with pastels the most beautiful scenes of the Greenland ice.  Her paintings are huge.  Take a look at this video (it's not long) and see Zaria's amazing paintings that she does as her way of enlightening us to the beauty of our planet.
