A History Lesson in Vegetarian Diet

I've been reading up a little history that I thought you might be interested in.

It seems that every culture throughout history has used food to prevent and treat illness and promote good health. Apparently the Egyptians used lentils to enlighten the mind and the Greeks and Romans used honey to heal wounds. In China, grains and sprouted beans treated a wide range from constipation to dropsy.

That was ancient times. So around the time of the industrial revolution man, in his wisdom, decided not to continue with foods for medicinal purposes and it's really only in recent times that food has come back into fashion for the health and well being of the human body.

There also has been extensive research into eating habits and the properties of individual foods as the concern about our health grows. These studies have revealed the positive attributes of a diet that is rich in fruit and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and beans with only a moderate amount of dairy foods.

It's interesting that studies have shown that those who follow a vegetarian diet suffer less from things such as obesity, cancer, heart disease, gallstones, diabetes and constipation. On a whole those eating this diet compared to the normal western diet are healthier.

Unfortunately it still is regarded as "alternative" or "way out there" or rather "odd" but as vegetarian foods become more and more tasty, available and easy the more the "average" person will give it a go….starting with Meatless Mondays. Try our Vegetarian Starter Kit
